State officials have decided against asking South Dakota counties to give up their share of Homeland Security grants to help fund an upgrade to the state's radio communications system.
Public Safety Secretary Tom Dravland earlier asked counties to vote on the idea. He says just more than half of counties approved the move, while others wanted to give up only part of their grant money.
Dravland says that was not enough support to move forward with the upgrade, which is estimated to cost about $5 million.
Dravland says the state will look at other options for replacing the aging radio system.
Law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical response crews and schools use the state radio system.
