Search and rescue crews have recovered the body of a young man who drowned Saturday at Lake Madison.
They found the body of 18-year old Dylan Nelson of Madison just after 10:30 Saturday night. Before Dylan drowned, officials say he was responsible for helping get two young boys to safety.
Dylan Nelson was swimming in Lake Madison Saturday afternoon with his younger brother and cousin. The Lake County Sheriff says the three were working their way along the sandbar when a strong current pulled them under.
"The area where they were swimming, when you go to the northwest, it is a quick drop off from waist high level to 10 or 11 feet of water, rather quickly," Chief Deputy of the Lake County Sheriff Department Tim Walburg said.
Andrew and the cousin made it out of the water. Sunday morning, they told Walburg about the heroic rescue.
"They described how Dylan came up there. Dylan may not have known what was going on at first, but once he realized that something was wrong, he saved one, went back out and saved the other," Walburg said.
Dylan was able to swim, carrying his cousin closer to shore where someone on a jet ski picked up the younger boy. Then, he went back to rescue his brother, again taking him the jet ski. But after that, Dylan went underwater and didn't resurface.
That's when crews from about a dozen different agencies stepped in to help with the search.
"With all the agencies involved, we do the training and everybody just comes together as one big team. We work as well as we can, as fast as we can," Walburg said.
While the rescue turned to a recovery, it's those efforts that helped bring closure to family, friends and the community.
Dylan Nelson graduated from Chester High School in 2008 and went to the University of South Dakota last year.
The two younger boys who were rescued were expected to be released from the hospital sometime Sunday.
