A western South Dakota family is in court to force insurance coverage for a 3-year-old boy who has a brain tumor.
Doctors in Minnesota removed a brain tumor and later a spine tumor from Cooper Urbanak and suggested he be treated with high-dose chemotherapy followed by a stem-cell transplant at a cost of $400,000.
The insurance provider, Sanford Health Plan, notified Joe and Missy Urbaniak that the treatment for their son would not be covered, calling it "experimental/ investigational" treatment.
Sanford Health Plan executive Ryan Bohy says he can't talk specifically about the case, but says the company continues to work with the family and has treated it fairly.
The couple's attorney wants a trial this month on his request that the company be required to provide the treatment.
