South Dakota voters will likely be deciding the fate of another proposed abortion ban when they go to the voting booth in November.

Those in favor of the ban with exceptions for rape and incest, announced Saturday that they have more than enough petition signatures to put the measure to a statewide vote.

Pro-life supporters from across South Dakota came together today with one number on their minds.

"We think 48 million dead babies is enough," Allan Unruh said.

But there's another number that's important in the politics of the abortion debate: 16,776: the number of petition signatures needed by Tuesday to get an abortion ban on the ballot. And Saturday, members of "Vote Yes For Life" found out they had more than enough.

"46,000 and still counting!"

"I think it shows that the people of South Dakota really care about the whole thing that we're working on," Pro-life Lawmaker Mary Glenski said.

But Jan Nicolay with the "Campaign for Healthy Families" says she expected to see a higher number because of how much time the supporters had to collect signatures. So the 46,000 figure isn't discouraging pro-life supporters from working to defeat the issue.

"We're not going to stop now. We're dedicated to move forward," Nicolay said.

But the success of collecting signatures doesn't mean the hard work is over for the backers of the ban. They still have to get the people to vote.

"We just want to make sure all those people who were supportive in regard to the petitions and who understand what we've been working for when it comes to getting out to vote and I'm sure they will," Glenski said.

While the pro-choice supporters continue to inform South Dakotans voters of the issue before they go to the polls.

"We'll have a lot of work cut out for us and we've said that before because we have to make sure people understand what that initiative really does," Nicolay said.

It will be up to South Dakota voters to decide what impact including the exceptions of rape an incest will have on the abortion ban's fate in November.

In 2006, South Dakota voters rejected a ban that would have outlawed most abortions in the state. The vote was 56% against a ban, and 44% in favor.
