This weekend, governors from across the nation will gather to discuss many topics. One of those is internet safety for children. Governor Mike Rounds believes if states communicate and work together, a lot can be done to protect kids.
When it comes to the internet, there are no boundaries. And that's why the governors will discuss how to keep children safe while online. Governor Mike Rounds says working with other states is key.
"It's a matter of putting together coordinated efforts," Rounds said.
It's not as difficult to deal with illegal internet activity when it's in the same state.
"If you have one person who's got an illegal activity in a single state and they can be charged in that state, you don't have a problem," Rounds said.
The problem comes when an individual is doing something illegal across state lines because the laws are different. But when states communicate and coordinate efforts, it can be much easier to catch the potential predators.
"It can help expedite a law enforcement activity that can grab a hold of an individual who is taking advantage of kids in another state," Rounds said.
By using teamwork, the governors hope to protect children across all boundaries.
Other topics the governors will discuss over the weekend include global warming, health information technology, and being competitive internationally. The meeting lasts through Monday and is held in Traverse City, Michigan.
